Why are you seeking election to
the Washington DC School Board?
My decision to run for the school board president was not made lightly.
It has grown out of a lifetime commitment to public service and genuine
concern for our most vulnerable and under-served communities.
Our system is in a state of
crisis. It will take drastic reform and crisis management to effect
improvement. Unless prudent steps are taken, we will have yet another
generation of children robbed of their basic rights to a quality
education, and the achievement gap will continue to widen. I want to use
my experience and leadership to reverse the continuing decline in our
system, improve the quality of education, and put our children first.
What are your qualifications
for the position you seek?
I am uniquely qualified to make an immediate positive impact.
I bring to the District of Columbia Board of Education my strong
combination of experience, innovation and skill in managing complex
systems. I have served under 15 mayors and countless legislators.
I am a consensus builder and
encourage strong partnerships at all levels. I recently completed the
Broad Program, an extremely competitive training program for
non-traditional education leaders. I spent ten months immersed in the
latest research and thinking on education and learning from some of the
foremost leaders on education issues in the country.

What is your opinion of mayoral
candidate Adrian M. Fenty's position that the elected Washington DC
School Board be converted to an appointed advisory panel?
I have not had the opportunity to review the proposal with
any significant detail, making it difficult to provide an evaluation and
respond. If elected, I will work collaboratively with the incoming
Mayor, the City Council, the School Board, and District residents to
make sure that any plan that is put forward results in improved student
outcomes. |
