Vote 2006 Presents 2006 Candidates for
Washington DC Board of Education District IV Member
Who would you vote for?

Jackie Pinckney Hackett Jimmy Johnson William Lockridge Jacque D. Patterson Cardell Shelton
School Board District IV Member Candidate Cardell Shelton's responses:
Why are you seeking election to the Washington DC School Board?
I am an advocate for survival skills to be taught in the DC Public School System and on the job. The students need me because I am the best person to represent their interests. Our young people need to learn a trade and survival skills to compete in today's society.

Washington DC is going through a transition on a fast track to become a high tech center. New facilities to house technology businesses and its workforce are being developed. Our young people need early exposure to these trends and education to become productive law abiding citizens. No one wants a dummy because a dummy is a dangerous person.

What are your qualifications for the position you seek?
I have 60+ years of work experience in the building trades and 75+ years of life skills. I am a world traveler and I've studied and observed many ideologies and philosophies. I am a well-read person, have taught on the high school level, I am a builder, artisan and master of the trowel trades. Finally, I love what I do.
In your opinion what are the five major issues facing the Washington DC School System?
  • The system needs an independent audit of its finances.
  • Hire experienced tradesmen to maintain DCPS facilities.
  • Hire experienced administrators to administer the system.
  • Match curriculum to needs of the community's development.
  • Establish a developmental training program for all personnel.
Who or what is to blame?
Lack of effective leadership on the part of the superintendent, administrators and current elected/appointed school board. The community is also responsible for it's lack of activism regarding important school related issues.
What is your opinion of mayoral candidate Adrian M. Fenty's position that the elected Washington DC School Board be converted to an appointed advisory panel?
The concept may work, however it needs significant community review and input.
Do you have a web site for your candidacy?
No.
