Vote 2006 Presents 2006 Candidates for
Washington DC Board of Education District III Member
Who would you vote for?

Stephane Baldi Marc Borbely Robert Vinson Brannum Mary Baird-Currie Lisa Raymond
School Board District III Member Candidate Mary Baird-Currie's responses:
Why are you seeking re-election to the Washington DC School Board?
Community leaders and residents of Ward 5 expressed to me their dissatisfaction regarding the hybrid election system for the past 8 years. This level of disfranchisement and the lack of involvement and representation have created 8 years of Ward 5 frustration.

It is time for Ward 5 to have full representation. My candidacy is therefore the answer to provide Ward 5 with quality leadership on the Board of Education.

What are your qualifications for the position you seek?

  • Retired DC Public School Guidance Counselor
  • Masters and 60 plus credit hours
  • Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner
  • President, Brookland-Woodridge AARP Chapter 2414
  • President, Brookland Civic Association
  • DC Professional Counseling License, PLC
  • National Certified Counselor, NCC
  • Political Analyst on "From the Desk of Lil" Cable TV Program
  • As Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner led the community in lobbying the DC City Council for the new $12 million dollar state of the art Turkey Thicket Recreation Center with swimming pool
In your opinion what are the five major issues facing the Washington DC School System?
  • Provide oversight and accountability over budget and program
  • Establish a disciplinary code to deal with disruptive behavior
  • Upgrade the physical structures & provide safety & security
  • Reinitiate drop out training and career development programs
  • Support moratorium on charter schools and give DCPS priority
Who or what is to blame?
Blame is useless, time wasting, and not productive. All interests' should focus on providing programs and fast forward plans to rebuild our system to better accommodate the student population.
What is your opinion of mayoral candidate Adrian M. Fenty's position that the elected Washington DC School Board be converted to an appointed advisory panel?
Education should be left to educators. An advisory board or consulting team should be established to work with the elected board as a needed resource.
Do you have a web site for your candidacy?
No, however I can be reached through email.
